Canon T3i – Canon out with a new entry level DSLR

A year ago, Canon had T2i which could capture 1080p videos and now the company is out with its successor, the Canon T3i. It is a new entry level dSLR from this company and was announced on Monday. The manufacturer also announced two flashes and one of them is optimized for video recording. I did get the new camera for review and after testing it, I found that that it is really underwhelming because the device is quite similar to T2i. Both the cameras can capture 18 megapixel images at 3.7 fps or frame rates per second and there is also 1080p video capture along with manual controls. There is just one big change here – the three inch screen now has a resolution of 1.04 million dots and it is mounted on retractable LCD.

It is surprising to see that Canon didn’t choose to put any video centric features here like continuous auto-focus during the video recording. Competing cameras like Nikon D3100 do have it and with this feature, you can enable face detection, to make the experience similar to that of a camcorder. There aren’t any big video features here but the manufacturer has announced a very clever accessory for video enthusiasts – hybrid flash which is meant for video recording and still images. On the top, there is a traditional flashtube which discharges light flashes while you shoot images. There is also a LED on front which will remain on while recording videos. All this will be handy in low light conditions. 

These 2 new flashes on the Canon EOS Rebel T3i have handy wireless capabilities. There are wireless slave unit built in to the flashes and you can get really creative with your pics. You can also use these flashes are a remote control for the camera. The flashes have dedicated shutter release key for commanding the device to capture images.

Nokia 6500 Classic – average sized alphanumeric keypad

Thin phones have been around for a while but Nokia didn’t adapt this design initially. However, they have done it know in the form of phones like Nokia 6500 classic. The Nokia 6300 was a big success in the market and this has led the manufacturer to produce more lanky handsets. This can be also said for business phones like E51. The super slim design of the Nokia 6500 classic puts it in the same range as the Sony Ericsson W880i and Samsung Ultra Edition 8.4.

Nokia 6500 is more of a design centric handset but the lean form factor really struck me. There is plenty to like about the device; it is just 9.5 mm thick and it is one of the thinnest phones I have ever seen to date. Samsung Ultra Edition 5.9 is thinner than this but the classic and sleek looks of the Nokia 6500 Classic makes it comfortable in the hand. On the top half, the chassis has aluminum anodized frame which gives it a solid feel in the hand and the lower half cover feels plasticky. The SIM card and the battery compartment are located in the lower half. You can easily put this phone in tightest of jeans pockets.

For ergonomics, the Nokia 6500 has average sized alphanumeric keypad. The buttons white lit and this illumination goes well with the silver and black color scheme of this phone. Below each key, there is a raised tiny strip of silver bar but I found it a bit distracting while typing. The bumps represent the area which can be pushed but in the Nokia 6500, the area for tapping is located above raised edges.

The buttons of the Nokia 6500 Classic are quite easy to press and they give you tactile feedback too. People having big thumbs won’t have any problem while dialing or typing messages. The phone has a single connector for microUSB port and this gives the Nokia 6500 a streamlined look. There is a single port for audio connectivity, data connectivity and charging. This makes multitasking impossible. For instance, you cannot use the headset and also transfer files at the same time.

Apart from the two megapixel camera, onboard speakers and LED flash light, there aren’t a lot of features on the rear. Nokia 6500 Classic doesn’t even have a discrete volume rocker button and you have to use the directional pad for it.

We still don’t know how the modder managed to create something like this, but it looks impressive. Of course, this mod is too bulky to carry with you, and it doesn’t have a battery, so you won’t be able to carry it with you since you have to keep it plugged in, in order to play.
